Day 12: Santorini
Tuesday, June 1st, 1999
We wake up at the crack of dawn
to catch our 6:30 AM flight to Santorini. Although we are all tired, and
admittedly a little grumpy, we are cheered by a beautiful sunrise over
Athens.
We arrive in Santorini at
about 11:00 AM and take a taxi to the other side of the island to Oia. As we
pull up to the back entrance of our hotel, it looks as though the driver has
abandoned us in the middle of nowhere. He points to a small opening in a fence
with a dusty trail leading up to it and tells us to go ahead, he'll bring the
bags. I look at Dad, convinced that we will never see this man, or our
bags, ever again.
I am pleasantly surprised
by what was on the other side of that fence. We follow along narrow walkways
on the side of a cliff face until after about 5 minutes of walking, we arrive
at the Esperas. I'm not even going to try to
describe the beauty of this place. Instead, please click on the link
and see for yourself.
Walked down the cliff to
the small fishing harbor at the bottom. Enjoyed a plate of appetizers while we
watched a beautiful sunset over the Mediterranean.
